Anybody who hangs around me knows that I have a few favorite supplements which at times I talk about incessantly. Now, I am NOT big on multi-vitamins because I believe if you eat right you get the best sources of vitamins and minerals from food and our bodies don’t always know what to do with vitamins and minerals in pills. Not to mention, overdosing on certain vitamins and minerals can be harmful. That said, there are a few I think you just cannot get enough of from most of the food available to us today.
A few supplements that are hugely beneficial for those that suffer from stress, anxiety, muscle aches, pains, depression and I guess just LIFE in general are magnesium, probiotics and CBD Oil — yes I said CBD oil. Don’t worry it doesn’t contain THC or at least it is at very low levels and is legal in 50 states! More on this AWESOME supplement this weekend!
But for now, I want to give a shout out to magnesium and the incredible impact it has had on my physical/mental health. Did you know that the benefits of magnesium include prevention of insomnia, constipation, seizures, and asthma. It not only keeps your nerves, muscles, and bones healthy but it also helps build protein synthesis and cellular metabolism.
Other health benefits include:
- Reduces depression
- Enhances exercise performance
- Relieves symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome
- Treats insomnia
- Helps work against type-2 diabetes
- Helps prevent migraines
- Helps with digestion
- Relieves tight muscles
- Maintains healthy bones
So What Is Magnesium And Why Do You Need It?
Magnesium is an essential mineral that helps in calcium absorption by the human body and plays an important role in the formation and strengthening of teeth and bones. In addition, it is required for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body!
That said, do know magnesium tends be deficient in 80% of adults! Even though it may not be the most present mineral in our bodies in terms of its quantity, it is certainly one of the most crucial to overall health. The amount of research regarding the benefits of magnesium and the need to take magnesium supplements to counteract a deficiency is staggering.
Considering this… It is a good idea to take magnesium supplement regularly and eat magnesium-rich foods.
So How Do You Know If You Are Deficient?
For many people, a magnesium deficiency can cause systems such as muscle aches, poor digestion, anxiety, and trouble sleeping. That said, magnesium deficiency is often overlooked and rarely tested.
Why Are We So Deficient?
There are a few factors are at play including soil depletion that lowers the amount of magnesium present in crops, digestive disorders that lead to malabsorption of magnesium and other minerals in the gut. In addition, high rates of prescription medication and antibiotic use causes damage to our microbiome in our digestive tract to the point that magnesium cannot be absorbed and properly utilized from foods.
Types of Magnesium Supplements
Magnesium supplements can be found in a variety of forms and you should know that the absorption rate and bioavailability of magnesium supplements differ depending on the kind. Usually magesium that dissolves in liquid is better absorbed in the gut than less soluble forms.
Magnesium citrate in pill form, however, has personally worked for me and from research I have found it to be absorbed better than magnesium supplements in oxide and magnesium sulfate form.
Here’s a run down of some the different types of magnesium supplements that you’ll likely come across:
- Magnesium Chelate
- Magnesium Citrate
- Magnesium Chloride Oil
- Magnesium Glycinate
- Magnesium Threonate
- Magnesium Orotate
Because magnesium supplements have such few risks for side effects and toxicity, many health care professionals now recommend that adults take supplements regularly to prevent deficiency.
REMEMBER I am NOT a doctor and would never pretend to be so please consult your physician before starting ANY supplement regimen!
